And That's Just How It Is, 2023

This piece is one in a series of four portraits using a specific model I had photographs of. I attribute this series to saving my life. I began the project immediately after getting my second three-year parole denial and I was feeling suicidal. I was determined to get these paintings "right" or die trying.

Note the play of light across her face and upper chest. I really like how I captured it. These paintings were challenging but came out to be some of my best work.

I was lucky enough to procure free-world watercolor paint for this piece, which is usually nearly unobtainable. This is a great example of latent potential. If I had access to the appropriate art supplies, I could unlock my full creative capabilities.
