The only part of society that seems to matter to me is that part which I so desperately long for—love and family connection. Whenever I gaze into a reflective surface, I'm always transported to my heart's desire. I see in my reflection that part of society that pervades my every year, month, week, day, hour, minute, right down to the second.
The marks on the green cinder block wall show someone counting down—we call it "time travel"—until their return to society. The makeshift fireplace mantle with family photo and flower represents the distance incarcerated individuals go to arrange their cell to resemble their living rooms back in society. The light switch with its green "on" and red "off", is a nod to how in prison we turn on prison etiquette and turn off societal norms. Something as simple as a smile and wave could lead to calamity inside.
