This piece was inspired by the book “Elite Capture” by Olufemi O. Taiwo. One thing he said stayed with me; “changing the color of our chains doesn’t mean we’re free.” I painted three men here: the one who was fooled, the one who was lynched, and the one who got rich off the same system. Each of them has something around his neck. It’s not always a rope. Sometimes it’s money. Sometimes it’s silence. Sometimes it’s the illusion of success. I There are different forms of bondage, and very often we don’t see them until we’re already tied up.
