I started wondering what “Painting Ourselves into Society” might mean to Michigan's incarcerated women. I know for a fact they are strong women who inspire the male prisoners each time we hear news of how they use the courts to fight for changes. Those women work collectively, yet each woman's voice is important and it matters. This woman is painting herself into society utilizing her voice by casting her vote.
The many books demonstrate her willingness to use her time wisely, and educate herself. Positive word affirmations and mantras lining her field of view help ensure that she's not pulled into the pit of despair by rusted metal. The act of painting allows her to exist outside the rusted decay of her confinement.
