The most voracious and fearless animal on earth is a lioness fighting for her pride. It is nature’s most primal and perfect expression of love, loyalty, and community. They came to fight to the death; their courage is carried to their cubs through their roars of resistance. I finally heard it. I’m ashamed and sorry it took me so long and that so many people were hurt because of what I did. Assata Shakur, Lolita Lebron, Angela Davis, and Katherine Boudin broke free from a system that was set up to smoke them. They stood up, fought back, and left the struggle stained with the blood that ran from their eyes. It was beautiful because their roses didn’t die. Neither did mine. They survived the struggle. They are my sheroes.
