Three Marks of Existence
M. Seishin Cádiz
Throughout my life I've used artwork to process and express things that sometimes eluded language. After giving a talk on the Buddhist concepts of Impermanence(ANICCA), Suffering(DUKKHA) and Non-self(ANATTA), my creative half began giving them form.
Moving through time, certain language and phrases are used to reshape time to our particular preferences or annoyances. For example, saying, "This is taking forever!", when we know there's actually an end to it at some point. This also applies to that which we want to last. All of this contributes to Suffering—holding onto events and circumstances longer than what is good for us. All things have a beginning and an end—Impermanence. The ego holds "self" as permanent. Therefore, clear understanding sees Impermanence(ANICCA), Suffering(DUKKHA) and Non-self(ANATTA)—The three marks of existence. Time can only heal those wounds we tend to, so that we can continue on our journey through life. Life, just like time, flows like a river.
